Vanderbilt Health has received a federal contract providing up to $11.2 million over five years to build a clinical-trials platform supporting ARPA-H’s CIRCLE program. The Vanderbilt-led Goldilocks effort will test new diagnostics and treatments aimed at identifying and responding to harmful immune and inflammatory changes during critical illness.
The initiative focuses on ICU treatment and outcomes. Its connection to PICS is broader and indirect: it represents progress in critical-care research, with long-term survivorship benefits still to be established.

A prospective cohort of 4,092 patients from seven Dutch ICUs examined physical, cognitive, and mental health symptoms and quality of life at three and twelve months. Difficulties in each domain were associated with poorer changes in quality of life.
